Our recent January sale saw a hammer price of £75,000 for a fabulous Joseph Wright portrait that had been in the family that commissioned it originally until now.

Joseph Wright ARA, styled Joseph Wright of Derby, was an English landscape and portrait painter. He has been acclaimed as “the first professional painter to express the spirit of the Industrial Revolution”.

Henry VIII Oak Panel Sells for £96,000

The final day of our recent Autumn auction included nearly 500 lots from a single owner private collection. Every lot was keenly contested and the top of the day was this truly unique 16th century oak carving of Henry VIII enthroned selling at a hammer price of £96,000.

The late Patrick Kelly was ‘an eclectic collector of the things he loved’ and would have been delighted to see this wonderful piece reach ten times the anticipated hammer price.

We knew that Lot 1184 in our March “Country House & Selected Antiques” auction was going to be sought after, but we never tire of the gasps when a fabulous painting or special work of art sells for big prices.

This work of art (JOHN GRIMSHAW. (1836-1893) VESPER TIME, LABELLED VERSO AND INSCRIBED ON THE STRETCHER) had the packed auction room and over 1200 online bidders captivated as it climbed to the final selling price of £52,800 including buyers commission and tax.
